Guyana’s artistic wealth celebrated overseas

In 2009, US-based Guyanese writer Grace Aneiza Ali launched her Of Note Magazine, an online source celebrating Guyanese artists.
In a recent interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine, Ali said Guyanese need to know more about people impacting their communities through the arts. She said too that within online and print media, there is underreporting of artists whose work blend art with activism and positively impacts change in our communities, both locally and globally, and Of Note works to counter that absence.
“We’ve done a series of focused issues in the Guyana edition. Artists telling the stories of children around the world are one of them. We’ve brought incredible artists using their work for social change to communities and audiences, making their work more accessible. We are working on two upcoming issues: artists telling the stories of Ethiopia and artists using their work to advocate for girls’ education in developing countries,” Ali revealed.
Recently, Ali launched the Guyana’s issue of her online magazine, with more than 75 invited guests joining in celebrating a notable moment in her life.

Grace and a well-wisher at the event

The invitation-only event took place at the beautiful brownstone gallery, home of Guyanese art collector Tim Griffith in Brooklyn, New York, whose walls are adorned with an eclectic collection of established and emerging Guyanese artists.
“This issue aimed to counter some of the misperceptions about Guyana, and to present artists that are portraying Guyana in all of its dimensions and complicated beauty,” stated Ali.
The event’s programme included a screening of the 2011 Cannes-selected short film, The SeaWall by Guyanese-born filmmaker Mason Richards. The film then ushered in a dynamic conversation with other artists featured in the magazine’s special issue, including visual artist Carl Hazlewood and photographer Keisha Scarville. The conversation explored the breadth of cultural and artistic wealth of Guyana.
Several dignitaries and members of the arts, education, activism and business communities attended the celebration, including Miss Guyana World, Arti Cameron, and representatives from the Guyana Consulate.
